Why the Reopening of a Rockville High School Affects Us

Recently the MKPC PTA leadership has learned that the County is planning to re-open Woodward HS to ease overcrowding in the Walter-Johnson HS area. This impacts us in the Blair Cluster.

The Blair cluster is involved in the reopening of Woodward HS because Blair HS is overcrowded; therefore, the County is considering busing DCC students to Woodward. (DCC stands for Down County Consortium.) The County is fast-tracking this Woodward reopening, scheduled to be completed by 2022.

It is also possible that the County will redistrict for MCPS in the next few years. Any redistricting plans will not take place until 18 months before the Woodward HS reopening in 2022.

Although there have been rumors circulating that some magnet programs may be changed, that rumor is not true - no programs at Blair HS or any other school will be affected. However, a new program may be added to Woodward HS. Community members gathered at a meeting on April 19th to brainstorm ideas for possible magnet programs for the new high school, ideas which the Board of Education will consider.

It's important for Blair Cluster members such as you to come to the big, public presentation by the Board of Educationon Wednesday, May 31 at the Carver Building, 850 Hungerford Rd., Rockville. Don't miss this chance to show the Board that the Blair schools are paying attention to this Woodward HS issue.

PTA Board Elections

At the April 5 PTA General Meeting, current PTA members voted in a new Treasurer (Elise Lee) and a new Recording Secretary (Rebecca Wilson). These positions are a 2-year term and are Executive Board positions for the MKPC PTA. Terms begin on July 1, 2017.

We still need someone to manage PTA communications (Corresponding Secretary). Be a part of the difference the PTA makes (and make some friends)! Email us now at [email protected].
